Seattle Supersonics Roster Report 2008-06-30

Seattle Supersonics Roster Report 2008-06-30
DRAFT PICKS:

Russell Westbrook, G, 6-3, UCLA -- Defensive-minded combo guard who the Sonics hope will develop into a defensive stopper.

Serge Ibaka, F, 6-10, Republic of Congo -- Talented but unpolished front-court player who the team will keep in Europe and continue to develop. Pick acquired from Phoenix.

D.J. White, F, 6-9, Indiana -- A good rebounder who can shoot and play with his back to the basket. Gives the Sonics another scoring option inside. Acquired from Detroit by the Sonics trading their 32nd and 46th picks.

Devon Hardin, C, 6-11, California -- A long, athletic player who can block shots and potentially develop into a defensive presence inside for the Sonics.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Kevin Durant. Facing the toughest defender each night and defenses geared toward stopping him, along with the uncertainty of where the team will play next season, the 19-year-old rookie still averaged 20 points a contest in his rookie season.

MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER: Robert Swift. The young 7-footer played in only eight games for a total of 99 minutes this season, suffering a setback after returning for major reconstructive knee surgery on his right knee after adding forty pounds of bulk. Swift tore the meniscus in the same knee in February. He's a restricted free agent at the end of the season and needs to get healthy this summer.

?? FREE AGENT FOCUS: The Sonics are in the market for another big man to help fill the void in the middle and might be willing to use either power forward Chris Wilcox or point guard Luke Ridnour to help broker a deal. Wilcox was rumored to be involved in a potential draft-day deal with Miami that would have brought the Sonics the No. 2 overall pick and a chance to draft Michael Beasley. Wilcox is in the final season of a three-year contract that will pay him $6.75 million next season.

Ridnour could be the odd man out at point guard with Russell Westbrook now in the fold. Ridnour suffered through a rash of injuries last season and eventually lost the starting point guard job to Earl Watson. Ridnour will earn $6.5 million both this season and next season.

?? PLAYER NOTES:

--The Sonics offered often injured center Robert Swift a one-year qualifying offer, making him a restricted free agent.

The $3.6 million qualifying offer allows the Sonics to match any deal given to Swift by another team.

Even though Swift has played in only 71 games the last two seasons because of back-to-back knee injuries, Sonics general manager Sam Presti said the team "still believes" in the fourth-year center from Bakersfield, Calif.

Swift, 22, sat out the 2006-07 season after tearing his right ACL. Weight issues hampered his recovery, and chronic right knee tendinitis allowed him to play in just eight games before tearing meniscus in his right knee Feb. 21. Swift had surgery March 4 and is expected to return next season.

The year before his first surgery, Swift averaged 6.4 points and 5.6 rebounds in 2005-06. His career averages are 4.6 points and 4.0 rebounds.

Swift was the 12th overall pick in the 2004 draft.
