DRAFT PICKS:
Russell Westbrook, G, 6-3, UCLA -- Defensive-minded combo guard who the Sonics hope will develop into a defensive stopper. Serge Ibaka, F, 6-10, Republic of Congo -- Talented but unpolished front-court player who the team will keep in Europe and continue to develop. Pick acquired from Phoenix.
D.J. White, F, 6-9, Indiana -- A good rebounder who can shoot and play with his back to the basket. Gives the Sonics another scoring option inside. Acquired from Detroit by the Sonics trading their 32nd and 46th picks.
Devon Hardin, C, 6-11, California -- A long, athletic player who can block shots and potentially develop into a defensive presence inside for the Sonics.
PLAYER NOTES:
--With training camp set to begin at the end of the month, players were trickling into Oklahoma City to participate in voluntary workouts. They included Damien Wilkins and Desmond Mason, who attended the unveiling of the team's colors earlier this month, along with centers Johan Petro and Mouhamed Sene.
--NBA veteran Desmond Mason, who has played in Seattle, New Orleans and Milwaukee, said his teammates will enjoy the supportive fans in Oklahoma City. "Players around the league noticed the sellouts here and how crazy the fans were," Mason told The Oklahoman. "The guys coming in from Seattle are really going to enjoy it here. The one thing that stood out is I don't remember getting booed one time. Every other city I played in, at some point in time we got booed. Oklahoma City has great fans."
--Three players whom the team picked up for 10-day contracts last season have been signed by other teams. Ronald Dupree, a 6-foot-6 athletic swingman, has signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Journeyman Eddie Gill was signed by New Jersey, his fifth stint with the Nets. And Mike Wilks signed with Orlando.
