Oklahoma City Thunder Roster Report 2009-01-12

Oklahoma City Thunder Roster Report 2009-01-12
ROTATION: Starters -- Point guard Earl Watson, Shooting guard Russell Westbrook, Small forward Kevin Durant, Power forward Jeff Green, Center Nick Collison. Bench -- Guard Desmond Mason, Guard Kyle Weaver, Forward Joe Smith, Center Nenad Krstic, Center Chris Wilcox, Guard Damien Wilkins, Guard Chucky Atkins.

PLAYER NOTES

--G Chucky Atkins realizes that his role in OKC includes mentoring rookie point Russell Westbrook. It seems that Atkins is a fan of his new teammate.

"He is one of the most athletic guys in our league," Atkins said of Westbrook. "The guy is 6-3, he's explosive, he's extremely fast and he has long arms. I was watching him last week when we played here and I couldn't believe how fast he was.

"A lot of people talk about his athleticism as far as jumping, but I never really knew he was as fast as he was. So he has all the tools. He has a lot to work with and I look forward to working with him."

--C Nenad Krstic has earned more playing time. Based on just a handful of practices and a couple of games, the free-agent signing is picking up Scott Brooks' system rather quickly. Krstic scored eight Saturday at Chicago.

"We know what he can do," Brooks said. "He showed that the last couple of games and the last week or so of practice. Now it's going to be based on everybody's performance. You earn your minutes. He's earning minutes right now, and we like what he's bringing to our team. Our guys ... enjoy playing with him. He knows how to play."

--G Earl Watson started Saturday night to help match up with the Bulls' small lineup and because Desmond Mason is still out. Watson took over the point guard duties, with rookie Russell Westbrook sliding over to shooting guard.

Watson made the most of the start, playing 43 1/2 minutes and dishing out a game-high 11 assists in the win at Chicago.

MEDICAL WATCH

--F D.J. White (jaw surgery) had a benign tumor removed Oct. 13. The second phase of the surgery involved mending the jaw with bone graft taken from his hip. Recovery time is four-to-six months. He's begun doing light workouts.
