Oklahoma City Thunder Roster Report 2008-12-06

Oklahoma City Thunder Roster Report 2008-12-06
ROTATION: Starters -- Point guard Russell Westbrook, Shooting guard Damien Wilkins, Small forward Kevin Durant, Power forward Jeff Green, Center Chris Wilcox. Bench -- Guard Earl Watson, Forward Joe Smith, Forward Nick Collison, Center Johan Petro, Guard Desmond Mason.

PLAYER NOTES:

--F Kevin Durant knows he has to bulk up for many reasons. It would help with his rebounding, defense and just being physically able to better handle the NBA grind. But, in the opinion of Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy, Durant shouldn't get carried away with redefining his perimeter-based game.

"The key to being great in this league is you have a defined game of what you do well and continue to do it better and better," Van Gundy said. "Will he become a better post-up player? Yeah. But if he's spending all his time trying to become a low-post guy, honestly, I think he's spending his time the wrong way."

--C Robert Swift has missed the last eight games with back spasms. He hasn't returned to practice, but is improving.

"I honestly don't know how I hurt it," he said. "I woke up one morning and couldn't move. It feels like it's been two months, not 10 days. But it's a lot better. Doctors can't give me a timetable."

--G Earl Watson moved to the bench to make room for Russell Westbrook. Scott Brooks said the change was more about evaluating the rookie point guard than being unhappy with the veteran Watson.

"I love what Earl brings," Brooks said. "He's a tough defender, a team leader and he's going to be put in a role in which we need that spark and leadership off the bench right now."

MEDICAL WATCH:

--F D.J. White (jaw surgery) had a benign tumor removed on Oct. 13. The second phase of the surgery, expected to follow in about six weeks, involves mending the jaw with bone graft taken from his hip. Recovery time is four to six months.

--C Robert Swift (lower back discomfort) is inactive. He's officially listed as day-to-day.
