ANALYZING STARTERS:
G Kevin Durant is the recognized face of the franchise. The silky-smooth shooting guard should be among the league's scoring leaders this season despite nightly double-teams. He's shown definite flashes of improved defense during the preseason. G Earl Watson fills the role of a steady veteran point guard who is coming off the best season (10.7 points and 6.8 assists) of his seven-year career. He's not among the best floor generals in conference loaded with great point guards, but Watson isn't a bad option.
F Jeff Green plays outside-inside, can run the floor and owns above-average strength for his position. Though he's a natural small forward, he can be used at power forward in a pinch. Green should be a nice complement to Durant for years to come.
F Chris Wilcox has seen his numbers skyrocket since leaving the Clippers for the Sonics, averaging better than 13 points and seven boards the last two seasons. Staying at that level will be quite an accomplishment as the team continues to stress its youth movement.
C Nick Collison is steady, not spectacular. After missing his entire rookie season, the Kansas product has fashioned a solid career and remains of favorite of coaches. He averaged career-highs in points (9.8) and boards (9.4) last season.
ANALYZING KEY RESERVES:
G Russell Westbrook is the point guard of the future. The fourth pick has impressed during preseason and is considered a star in the making.
G/F Desmond Mason brings a veteran presence to the swing positions. He also has local knowledge, which can't be overlooked in the transition from Seattle.
F/C Joe Smith has been around the block and that's why he's in OKC. He's a great resource on a team full of young minds.
C Johan Petro has been pressed into preseason action because of injuries to Robert Swift and Mo Sene. The experience can't hurt.
MEDICAL WATCH:
F D.J. White (jaw surgery) had a benign tumor removed on Oct. 13. The second phase of the surgery, expected to follow in about six weeks, involves mending the jaw with bone graft taken from his hip. Recovery time is 4-6 months.
F Joe Smith (fracture nose) suffered the injury after being inadvertently elbowed by teammate Russell Westbrook in Sacramento. Smith should be able to play with a protective mask.
G Jeff Green (sprained ankle) took a spill in Oakland. The injury is considered minor.
C Robert Swift (hand) hasn't played in the preseason and isn't expected to be ready to start the season.
C Mo Sene (knee surgery) hasn't played in the preseason and isn't expected to be ready to start the season.
