Oklahoma City Thunder Getting Inside 2009-01-09

Oklahoma City Thunder Getting Inside 2009-01-09
The Thunder certainly aren't standing pat as the team trudges on with the league's worst record (5-31). Oklahoma City added to its collection of first-round picks this summer with Wednesday's trade for Denver point guard Chucky Atkins.

The Thunder also received a first-round choice, giving the franchise three such picks in the 2009 NBA draft. The Thunder gave up reserve center Johan Petro and a second-round selection.

"We feel like by adding Chucky Atkins to our team, we've achieved a couple of objectives," Thunder general manager Sam Presti told the team's web site. "We've balanced our roster and added another positive addition to our team who we feel can help stretch the floor as a shooter.

"And we will continue to look at how we will utilize our additional first-round pick, and how we will continue to help build our team."

The three picks can go a long way towards adding talent. Not only can the Thunder add to its young core through the draft, but it can package one or more of the selections in potential trades.

Atkins, a nine-year veteran, joins the point guard rotation behind starter Russell Westbrook and Earl Watson. Atkins could end up making Watson expendable.

WOLVES 129, THUNDER 87: Twenty-four hours after celebrating a rare win, Oklahoma City was humbled Wednesday at Minnesota. Randy Foye tied his career-high with 32 points as the Timberwolves won their fourth straight.

The Thunder was never in it, trailing by 18 after the first quarter and 29 at the half. Kevin Durant struggled through a 3-of-13 shooting performance and scored just nine points. The Thunder shot just 39.8 percent.

Point guard Russell Westbrook was the only Thunder starter in double-figures with 16 points. He added a career-high 12 assists. Backup center Nick Collison (team-high 17 points) was Westbrook's only teammate with more than nine points.
