Hold onto your Cherrios, Sam Presti, because Mr. Monday is about to make things a little more complicated for ya leading up to the NBA Draft.
Here's what Mr. Monday has figured out. This year's draft is the equivalent of a Target clearance rack with 19 extra-small white V-neck sweaters and one XXL blue button-up. Unless you're an unusual European, there's only one real choice. In this case, the one good choice is Blake Griffin.
You know it, Mr. Monday knows, Sam Presti knows it and hopefully Blake knows it.
So what should everyone do with that information?
Well, Mr. Monday's suggestion is for the Griffins to press the ol' leverage button. Give Eli and Archie Manning a call, Tommy Griffin, and find out how that kid managed to not have to go to the San Diego Chargers.
Eli sat in much the same position as Blake, the assured and predestined No. 1 pick.
So if you know you are going No. 1, why deal with having to play in Sacramento?
Seriously, couldn't the Griffins pull the same move, folding their arms across their chests and saying, "No way," after the results of the lottery are announced?
All those tried, true and blue Thunder fans would love to have Blake teaming up with Kevin Durant downtown, while the rest of the Western Conference is wondering what the heck just hit them.
This might give Presti and David Stern heartburn, but couldn't that happen? Couldn't Blake tell whoever has the No. 1 pick that they need to trade it to the Thunder for some value, or else he'll just spend next year as a part-time instructor at the Northside Y?
Sure, it's not the nicest thing in the world to do, but it's not the worst thing in the world. The worst thing that could happen is you end up the most unpopular person in Sacramento. Who holds that title now? Maria Shriver?
So, Mr. Monday suggests you go for it, Blake. Tell the lottery winners to give the Thunder a call and a fruit basket and get this deal done. You get much love from Oklahoma City , the Thunder get the player they want and all is well with the NBA.
That is, until Sam Presti gets a better idea.
